Volunteers with the Whitley County Humane Society rescued more than a dozen dogs from cages inside a horse trailer near Churubusco, according to ABC 21.
The Whitley County Humane Society states “You don’t put puppies into cat cages and then stuff them in a horse trailer and then cover them with tarp.” “Frankly they were happy to get out of those cages. When our staff was out there they actually came to them because they provided water. They were very, very dehydrated.”
Shelter volunteer and board member Carol Flowers said they have been worried about these dogs for months after multiple calls from concerned residents. “
Every single dog was covered in feces, and urine, and mud.”
Flowers states that many of the puppies have major growth issues since many of them were stuffed in cat cages.
“Many of the puppies are swollen because they were kept in cages too small for them and so their limbs are swollen and not developed properly. It’s a definite sign of neglect, they were not cared for properly.”
The prosecutor is currently reviewing the case to see if charges will be filed. Pictures of the dogs will be released when the investigation is complete.
It is currently too early for the puppies to be adopted. According to shelter leaders, it will take some time to work with the dogs and make sure that they are healthy before they can find them new homes.
