(Network Indiana) — If you placed a sports bet during March Madness in Indiana, you helped make the state have its second-best month ever for sports gambling. Nearly $317 million in wagers were made in the state last month.

“Which is the highest non-football month that Indiana has ever had,” said Jessica Welman with PlayIndiana.com. “NFL will always be the betting cash cow, but Indiana loves their basketball and we saw that happening.”

The $316.7 million in wagers in March was up from the $273.9 million in February. It’s the second-most money the state has seen in wagers, only behind this January’s $348.2 million. However, Welman believes the numbers will go back down, starting at the end of this month.

“We’re getting into the part of the sports calendar where not as much is happening,” she said. “We got the NBA going on, and baseball is getting started … but this is the start of a slow period of time until football ramps back up again in the fall.”

Since sports betting became legal in Indiana, the state has seen a total of $3.1 billion in wagers.
