INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana law is catching up to the new technology that allows car owners to change their vehicle’s exterior appearance.
Legislation passed in Indiana now requires drivers to notify the BMV if they change the exterior color of their vehicle.
The new law took effect today, Jan. 1.
The law covers the application of new paint, the installation of a full or partial vinyl wrap, and even the removal of a vinyl wrap.
Owners must update their vehicle registration within 30 days of the change.
Failure to report may result in a warning from police.
If a vehicle’s color is changed after being used in a crime and is not reported, the owner can be charged with a Class C misdemeanor.
Changes can be made online at myBMV account, at all BMV branches, or with a BMV Connect kiosk if the registration is up for renewal.
