WASHINGTON, D.C. (Network Indiana) — Republicans continue to blast the White House for its handling of the crisis at the southern border.

Sen. Todd Young of Indiana has never been shy about reminding you of his military service with the U.S. Marine Corps on the southern border in Yuma, Arizona. He said on Wednesday that illegal crossings in that sector were down under the Trump Administration.

“I returned to the same sector in May of this year,” Young said. “I discovered that the crisis had returned. Why? A vacuum of leadership from the Biden-Harris administration.”

Young said the country is on pace to see over a million illegal crossings this year. He calls the crisis “a 50 state border crisis.”

“The situation is obviously growing worse and worse,” he continued. “It’s time that either President Biden or our southern border Czar, Vice-President Harris, shows up as it relates to this issue. Lead, follow, or get the heck out of the way.”

President Biden has proposed legislation that would eliminate provisions under Title 42, which allows border agents to expel people from crossing U.S. borders for public health reasons as it relates to the COVID pandemic.

Several Republicans have banded together to push a bill authored by Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, which would codify the Trump-era rules. Young is not among the co-sponsors of the bill, but Young did voice his displeasure with Biden’s push to eliminate the provisions.

Border patrol officers encountered 180,034 migrants attempting to cross the southern border in May. 112,302 of those people were immediately expelled under Title 42.
