Area veterinarians share tips to avoid canine influenza

There’s one area of the current flu epidemic that isn’t receiving much attention: Man’s Best Friend.

Veterinarians are worried that pets in the area could easily pick up canine influenza or other respiratory illnesses that are currently spreading through the region.

A flu vaccine for your pet is an excellent line of defense, as is the Bordetella vaccine that protects dogs from a bacterial illness that can follow the onset of flu.

During this flu season, vets recommend limiting the time your dogs spend interacting with other dogs in places like kennels and parks, and washing their toys. If your dog does become ill, check with your veterinarian.
