WABASH COUNTY, Ind. — An effort to designate two state forests as state parks has failed.

A petition supported by the Indiana Forest Alliance and Friends of Salamonie Forest sought to designate the Salamonie River and Frances Slocum state forests as state parks.

Such a change would have protected both northern Indiana forests from logging, reports The Chronicle-Tribune newspaper in Marion.

The Indiana Natural Resources Commission rejected the proposal last week.
