A date has been set for a Republican caucus to replace the late Charlie Smith on the Warsaw City Council.
According to a press release from Kosciusko County Republican Party Chairman Randall Girod, the caucus of eligible Kosciusko County Republican Precinct committeemen will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 in the City Council Chambers, Warsaw City Hall.
The caucus will fill Smith’s District 2 seat on the council for the remainder of his unexpired term and elect a person for the four-year term on Warsaw City Council, District 2, beginning Jan. 1, 2016, and ending Dec. 31, 2019.
Interested eligible candidates for the position of District 2 councilman must file a Declaration of Candidacy with Girod no later than 72 hours before the commencement of the caucus. Forms will be available from the Kosciusko County Clerk's office, 121 N. Lake St., Warsaw, beginning today.
Charlie Smith, his son and local attorney Scott Smith, sprint car driver and businessman Tony Elliott and former Tippecanoe Valley High School guidance counselor and coach Scott Bibler were killed in an airplane crash Oct. 2 on their way from Warsaw to Clemson, S.C., to attend a University of Notre Dame football game. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
