A substitute teacher and assistant football coach who worked at Clay High School has been arrested on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a student.
The principal received a tip about Andrew Steinke, 27, and contacted authorities who interviewed the student who told them she and Steinke had sex as many as 10 times between December 2017 and May 2018, according to the probable cause affidavit released by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.
The victim told Special Victims Unit investigators that she broke things off with Steinke because he became obsessed with her, the probable cause affidavit stated.
Steinke first denied the allegations, calling himself a good-looking teacher and, because of that, a target of rumors, but he later admitted to having sex, the probable cause affidavit stated.
Steikne was charged with child seduction. He was arrested and booked into the St. Joseph County Jail on Thursday, Aug. 9, but the court ordered him released on his own recognizance with a promise to appear. The court also ordered him placed on home detention upon his release.
Steinke’s arraignment is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 13 at 1 p.m.
