The Committee to Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. presents the first scholarship of the year

The Committee to Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. presented the first scholarship of the year yesterday to Warsaw Community High School senior Callie Green.

The award was presented at the community celebration to honor the civil rights activist.

Callie demonstrated scholastic excellence and lead by example that encompassed the heart of Dr. King through acts of community service and enriching the lives of others.

CCMLK Vice President and Warsaw Community Schools Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert announced Green as the scholarship recipient, “I have a special privilege this morning, I get to award the very first scholarship for the Class of 2017, and this is an exciting one.”

Callie plans to attend Ivy Tech in the fall.

Monday’s community celebration to celebrate the life of Dr. King was a success. Over 500 people attended the event at Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

Former Brooklyn Dodger Carl Erskine was the event guest speaker and shared stories about his experiences and close friendship with teammate Jackie Robinson.  Erskin highlighted Robinson’s ability to maintain his composure as the first African American to play in an all white league during a time when racial tensions were high.

Erskine is also an advocate for Special Olympics, his youngest son Jimmy has Down Syndrome and is a Special Olympic gold medal winner.
