Warsaw police responding to a Saturday night accident ended up investigating a suicide.

According to Warsaw Police Department Public Information Officer Det. Brad Kellar, at approximately 10:17 p.m. Saturday, Warsaw police officers were called to the intersection of Detroit Street and Anchorage Road for a property damage accident.

During the accident investigation, officers believed alcohol could have been a factor and began to shift into an impaired driving investigation, Kellar said. The patrol officer asked the driver responsible for the accident if he would consent to perform field sobriety tests.

“Upon his consent, the officer returned to his patrol vehicle to put down paperwork he was reviewing during the accident investigation. It was at that moment, for an unknown reason, the 34-year-old man, a resident of Kosciusko County, produced a firearm and took his own life while still seated in his vehicle,” Kellar said.

The victim is not being identified at this time. There were no other injuries to witnesses or officers on scene at the time of the fatal action.
