Dual exhibit opens Friday night at Atelier in Warsaw

News Release
WARSAW — Contemporary art gallery ATELIER will present a dual exhibition of paintings by
Cuban-born Reynier Garcia and sculpture by Indiana-based Adam Boyle from May
30 through July 25.

Secretos y Stone is an exhibition of 52 surrealist paintings by Reynier Garcia and 10
sculptures in stone by Adam Boyle. The show explores different ways of perceiving
the external world and plays with our conceptions of the surreal and the real.

Reynier Garcia is a surrealist painter born and raised in Havana, Cuba. In his
Secreto series, Garcia presents imagined desert landscapes populated with
recurring imagery evocative of flora and fauna. Each horizon is punctuated by
mesmerizing variations and actions. The paintings and the symbols and codes
within represent the artist’s own spiritual journey and invite the viewer to consider
their own subconscious mind.

As Garcia explains, “I explore the complexity of the daily spiritual interrelation
between humans and the universe, revealing challenges and scenes yet to be
discovered. In this dialogue between imagination and reality, I create space and
moment where materials, plants, and animals come to life in landscapes that
interact with the viewer.”

Adam Boyle is a sculptor based in Columbia City. He began his career
as an engineer and machinist in the orthopedics industry. He later pivoted to art,
and more specifically, sculpture.

Boyle creates elegant works from boulders and slabs of alabaster, marble, and onyx sourced from across the globe. Math is still his muse, and he views his work as creating tangible representations of mathematical concepts in stone. His minimal and compelling stone works reflect his deep commitment to the discipline of making by uniting technical insight with artistic expression.
According to Boyle, “When I work on a sculpture, I’m only looking at one line at a
time. If you see the sculpture as a plane, then rotate it, you can find a line.” The

Greek letter PHI ɸ represents the golden ratio, a proportion that is a commonly
held standard of beauty in art and architecture. In his sculpture, PHI, Boyle sought
to incorporate a golden rectangle in a Mobius loop. The cross-section of this
thickened Mobius form is approximately 1” x 1.618” following a 2” radius from the
center, the rectangle rotates a full 180” along the 4” diameter of the circle.
Executed in pink alabaster and Indiana limestone, the result is both sophisticated
and stunning.

“The two bodies of work may seem very disparate,” ATELIER Director Sea Grandon
acknowledges, “but, I saw a common visual language that I wanted to explore in
this exhibit. There are commonalities in terms of color and form between both

bodies of work, and I wanted to see what dialogue emerged when the works were
placed in proximity to each other. I love the interplay between Garcia’s imagined
landscapes and Boyle’s mathematically precise sculptures. The surreal and the
real—the soul and the mind—beautiful dualities.”

Grandon says Secretos y Stone was a thrilling show to curate. “I am very excited to
host this show at ATELIER. The show is beautiful and intellectually interesting as
both artists seek to depict unseen realms and make the invisible visible. Sand,
stone and sky are the perfect complement to summer. Additionally, Warsaw is
home to many international visitors, Spanish-speaking residents, and MedTech
engineers, so this show touches on a lot of our local strengths and diversities.”

Secretos y Stone opens May 30 and runs through July 25. Both artists will be in
attendance at the opening reception on Friday May 30 from 6-8:30pm. ATELIER’s
hours are 11am to 4pm Wednesdays and Thursdays and 11am to 8pm Fridays and
Saturdays.

Adam Boyle was born and raised in Delaware County, Indiana in 1981. He holds an
Associate of Science in Engineering Technology from Ivy Tech Warsaw and a
Bachelor of Science in Management from Grace College. These academic
foundations combined with a successful engineering career inform his precise
approach to form and material.

Boyle’s work has been included in group shows at Gallery 02 (Fort Wayne, IN), The Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Honeywell Center (Wabash, IN), Minnetrista Museum (Muncie, IN), and LaFontsee Galleries (Grand Rapids, MI). He lives and works in Columbia City. Secretos y Stone is Boyle’s first dual exhibition.
