East Market Street Houses Receiving Improvements

Times Union – Housing in the East Market Street corridor has started receiving a face lift.
The first home, owned by the Gilbert family, West Jefferson Street, Warsaw, is receiving a new roof and gutters, according to a press release from Housing Opportunities of Warsaw Inc.
Housing Opportunities is administering a $200,000 Community Block Grant for the City of Warsaw that was awarded by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority. HOW also has funding for housing projects from Lake City Bank FHLB Neighborhood Impact Funds and local funding from Kosciusko County Community Foundation, K21 and United Way of Kosciusko.
The materials for the Gilbert home’s new roof is paid for through a grant from the Kosciusko County Community Foundation and a $500 gift from United Way of Kosciusko County, the press release states. The contractor, Laverne Kauffman, owner of Kauffman’s Carpentry, volunteered their time and labor to re-roof the home and hang a new gutter system. The donation by Kauffman will allow the funding from the various sources to repair more homes.
The preservation of housing will include replacing components of homes that are outdated and unsafe. Energy updates and the funding also allows for retrofits for health issues and “aging in place,” according to the release.
