Elkhart County Sheriff’s officer dragged from vehicle, search underway for suspect

A search is underway for a 27-year-old man who police say dragged an Elkhart County Sheriff’s officer during a traffic stop.

It happened around 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, Sep. 8, in the area of Southdale Dr. and Hively Ave. in Elkhart.

The officer stopped the driver, Derrick Woods, 27, on suspicion of drunk driving.

While attempting to perform field sobriety tests on the driver, Woods took off on foot. The officer deployed his taser, but Woods continued to take off.

Woods circled back and got into his vehicle as the officer reached the driver’s side door.  The officer, who was trying to stops Woods was dragged for approximately 15 to 20 feet as the suspect continued to drive off.

The officer was thrown from the vehicle and was injured.

The officer received minor injuries to his head, shoulder, and legs, was treated and released from Elkhart General Hospital.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is still searching for Woods.

It is believed that he may be in South Bend.
