Elkhart voters approve merger of Elkhart Central, Memorial High Schools

There have been petitions created by two groups attempting to block the merger of the two high schools in Elkhart, but those efforts are now running out of steam.

Months of debate have come down to a vote about a $10 million dollar bond for the schools that would combine Memorial and Central.

WSBT reports that officials in Elkhart have confirmed a vote of 2,485 to 1,531 in favor of the bond that would help fund the merger. Elkhart’s two high schools are scheduled to merge at the beginning of the 2021 school year.

The bond will also provide more spots for Pre-Kindergarten and improve prep for careers and higher education.

The vote comes about a week and a half before Central and Memorial are set to face-off against one another in their respective high school football season openers.
