Family wins $744,000 lawsuit against now-deceased South Bend surgeon

A jury has ruled that the family of a former high school wrestler should be awarded $744,000 as the result of a medical malpractice lawsuit.

Dean and Tracy Dixon filed a lawsuit in June 2015 against Dr. Willard G. Yergler, who worked for South Bend Orthopedics and was the University of Notre Dame’s football team’s orthopedic surgeon for over 30 years, according to the South Bend Tribune.

The Dixons claim that Dr. Yergler performed unnecessary surgery in 2012 on their 16-year-old son. The family felt that there were more conservative options for their son instead of the surgery-or-nothing option they say Dr. Yergler presented. A malpractice panel agreed with the family.

Dr. Yergler died in May 2016. It’s unknown if the verdict will be appealed.
