A now-former Fort Wayne firefighter is accused of stealing upwards of $50,000 from a charity that benefits the families of fallen law enforcement officers and firefighters.

Indiana State Police officials say 53-year-old Daniel Newport of Fort Wayne has been arrested on a felony charge of theft. An investigation that started in December 2017 found that while he served as the treasurer for the Guns-N-Hoses charity, he allegedly took large sums of money for personal use.

The alleged theft happened between 2000 and December 2017. Newport resigned from the Fire Department earlier this week. He has since been arrested, incarcerated at the Allen County Jail, and released pending trial.
