A former Notre Dame men’s basketball coach has passed away.

John MacLeod was the head coach of the Irish from 1991 to 1999, and coached his son, Matt, during his last two seasons.

MacLeod’s son confirmed on Sunday, April 14, that his father had passed away at the age of 81.

The elder MacLeod also coached the NBA’s Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals in 1976, and also spent time as head coach for the Mavericks and Knicks during his 18-year NBA career.

He had been fighting Alzheimer’s disease for more than a decade.
