Gas leak prompts evacuations in downtown Elkhart

A gas leak was reported in downtown Elkhart around 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 21.

Police say the gas leak was the result of a crash. WNDU reports when the car hit the gas line, it caused enough damage to begin releasing natural gas into the air.

3rd Street was closed from Jefferson Street to Lexington Street. Second Street and Jackson Boulevard were also closed in that area. The streets have been reopened, but there are still lane restrictions on 3rd Street.

Crews were evacuating people from some buildings in that area out of an abundance of caution.

The leak was temporarily fixed, allowing residents who had to be evacuated to return to their homes in downtown Elkhart.
