A Goshen man is in jail after he led police on a chase in St. Joseph County.

Indiana State Police say troopers located a pick-up truck at a gas station around 7:00 PM on Thursday on the south side of South Bend at Kern Road and State Road 931 that was reported stolen out of Bremen.

As troopers began to move in, the driver, later identified as 29-year old Jared Hilty of Goshen, sped off on 931. Hilty was said to initially drive southbound in the northbound lanes, which caused one trooper to swerve off the road to avoid a collision.

Police say Hilty continued southbound on 931, and near the intersection of Roycroft Drive, drove off the road and into a soybean field. Hilty continued through the field before crashing into a tree, which caused the truck to catch fire. Hilty took off on foot, but was taken into custody shortly after.

Hilty is facing six charges, including three felonies for criminal recklessness, theft and resisting law enforcement. He is currently being held in the St. Joseph County Jail.
