A proposed ice skating rink project in Goshen is receiving $1 million.

The Elkhart County Community Foundation gave the funds, which brings the city closer to the $6 million needed for an ice skating pavilion. It will go in next to the Mill Race Trail south of Washington Street.

The goal is to offer a public skating rink in the winter and be a community space with other outdoor activities in the summer.

The Goshen Community Development Director Mark Brinson tells WNDU there is a lot of excitement for the project.

“People have been talking about an ice rink for two decades. There’s really no place in Goshen to go ice skating, so it’s something that the community is ready for,” he explains.

Goshen officials say they want the rest of the funding to come in the form of private donations, as opposed to holding a city fundraiser.
