WARSAW — There are more signs that Habitat for Humanity of Kosicusko County is moving faster these days and becoming more efficient.
The local chapter is in the midst of constructing three houses this year and there are three more planned for next year.
On Monday, they made a call out for more people to apply — the first step toward qualifying and learning about the home ownership program.
Unlike in the past, the wait list is shorter and has a quicker turnover.
“We don’t have a very long wait list,” said Executive Director Ben Logan. “Our goal is to get you in the home … within two years. On average, it’s about 18 months.”
They like to keep the list short because so many variable circumstances can change.
“We try to keep it pretty lean,” he said. “We’re talking about accepting families usually for next year’s build season.”
On Wednesday, Habitat will break ground for its third house of the year, this one at 1813 Hepler Drive on the west side of the city.
The upcoming project is another Women’s Build in which women lead the construction effort as well as fundraising.
Logan said they hope to complete construction on the Hepler House this year.
“That is the goal. It would be the fastest we’ve ever built, but we’ve been planning a lot ahead of time,” he said.
Logan said they continue to seek out opportunities to acquire land for future homes across the county.
