Doug Heinisch resigned Tuesday as the District 1 Kosciusko County Councilman.

His resignation was effective Tuesday.

District 1 includes Turkey Creek and Tippecanoe townships, the eastern part of Plain Township and a little more than half of the northern half of Washington Township.

Contacted by telephone Tuesday afternoon and asked why he resigned, Heinisch said, “I really am in a situation where I am unable to make meetings reliably. I’ve had a change in my work schedule and my travel schedule has changed. I’m not serving the county if I can’t be there.”

He said he missed the May County Council meeting and work will keep him from attending several meetings this summer.

“I’ve got to be there if I want to be effective,” he stated.

Heinisch, 50, of Sunset Drive, Syracuse, was serving his third term as a Republican Councilman. The term expires at the end of 2022. He said he started in 2010, replacing Charlene Knispel.

His takeaway of his time on the Council was that, “There are a lot of capable people who work for the county and care what they do.” He said it’s been great to see what the nonprofits that the Council supports do – like Cardinal Services and Beaman Home – and what they do for the community is “impressive.” Heinisch said there are so many people in Kosciusko County who are dedicated to the county.

Kosciusko County Republican Party Central Committee Chairman Mike Ragan said he will issue a news release by Friday about the caucus to replace Heinisch on the Council. A caucus must be held not sooner than 10 days but before 30 days after a resignation.
