Hoosier volunteers deployed to assist people affected by Hurricane Harvey

As Hurricane Harvey continues to impact the southeastern portions of Texas and Louisiana, the American Red Cross continues to mount a massive relief effort, which includes a lot of help from the Hoosier State.

Harvey made landfall along the Texas Gulf Coast on Saturday, Aug. 26, with winds topping 100 mph and up to 50 inches of rain, leading to devastating and life-threatening flooding.

The Indiana region of the American Red Cross has deployed at least 40 volunteers and two emergency response vehicles to areas affected by the storm. As many as 4 of the volunteers are reported to be from Elkhart County.

The Red Cross has also mobilized hundreds of trained Red Cross disaster relief workers, nationwide, along with truckloads of kitchen supplies and tens of thousands of ready-to-eat meals to support the response effort.

Trailers full of shelter supplies including cots and blankets-enough to support more than 20,000 people are in Texas.

Anybody who wants to donate to people affected by Hurricane Harvey can do so at www.redcross.org, or by calling 1- 800-RED CROSS, or texting the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

The Red Cross states the best way to ensure your donation will go to a specific disaster is to write the specific disaster name in the memo line of a check. They also recommend completing and mailing the donation form with your check.
