Illegal Canadian immigrant arrested in Elkhart after crash

An Edwardsburg woman who got into a crash in the Elkhart area earlier this month turns out to actually here illegally from Canada.

26-year-old Autumn Kent was charged with driving drunk and leaving the scene of an accident after the crash shortly before 11 p.m. Oct. 10 at C.R. 20 and Roys Avenue.

Elkhart police discovered Kent had driven her truck into a utility pole and speed limit sign when they arrived. The Elkhart Truth reports she handed officers a Canadian passport instead of a driver’s license and, despite saying she worked at a Middlebury business, said she didn’t have the legal right to work in the U.S.

She entered the U.S. six years ago on a six-month visitor pass.

An immigration hold was to be placed on her after her arrest, but she bonded out before that could actually be applied. Kent is supposed to be in court Friday.
