(Network Indiana) — You’re being asked to take an internet speed test. The test will help determine where the slowest speeds are and will help local leaders determine how to help build up Indiana’s broadband connectivity.

“So, this data really, it provides your information based on a particular location. But, it also captures who your providers are and what your speeds are,” said Katrina Hall, speaking for Indiana Farm Bureau in an interview with Inside Indiana Business. Farm bureau is one of many partners in the Indiana Broadband Strategic Partnership.

“It’s encouraged that people take the test multiple times,” she said. The primary goal of the partnership is to promote the Indiana Speed Test.

“Each one of these speed tests is gonna say who your carrier is,” she said. The goal is to get a reading on where the points of lowest coverage are, so that decisions can be made about how to invest money in making broadband more accessible.

“It shows the boundaries of counties, townships, school corporations,” said Hall. “So, a lot of the emphasis during the (legislative) session was and even at a federal level, was how do we get broadband to students so they can participate virtually?”

Hall said the information will be used so that providers don’t build on top of service that already exists.

Hall stressed that no personal information will be collected when you take the test.
