Leesburg Council Hears Request For Sewer Fee Reduction

Leesburg Town Council Monday heard a request for a sewer fee to be reduced for a building that was previously occupied.
Roberta Anderson, owner of the building on North Main Street, attended the meeting and said the building has been vacant for a year and she is being charged $437 a month for sewer fees for the vacant building. It was previously Farmer’s Cafe.
She said she is in the process of selling the building and wondered if the town could reduce the sewer fee since it is a vacant building.
“We’ve made genuine efforts to find a renter, someone who will do a good job,” Anderson said. “My intent is not to get out of paying the sewer bill.”
Larry Richey, board member, said he had concerns the town would be setting a precedent in lowering sewer bills.
“We have to make sure everything is enforced equally,” Richey said.
He said he was concerned that a business could request sewer fee reductions or waivers if they would go on vacation for a few months.
Doug Jones, board member, said Anderson’s situation is unique in that it is a vacant building.
The council agreed to table their decision and have Umbaugh & Associates review the request.
In other business, Brandon Queen, street superintendent, informed the council the leaf machine is working and residents are asked to separate the trash and yard debris at the curb.
The council approved a $243.49 contract with Pyramid Timetrack for a time clock for town employees and a $2,160.50 contract with Advanced Disposal for garbage pickup services.
The council set trick-or-treat hours for Oct. 31 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
