Man hospitalized, expected to survive after police pursuit ends with shots fired

St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is investigating after a police pursuit ends with shots fired.

Our news partners at WNDU report that around 4:30 Monday morning, St. Joseph County Police, Walkerton police, LaPorte County Police assisted North Liberty Police in a high-speed pursuit of a suspicious vehicle with stolen plates.

During the chase, the vehicle drove through multiple farm fields in the area of State Road 23 and Leeper Road.

The suspect rammed police vehicles with his car shortly before his vehicle and a Walkerton police car were engulfed in flames.

Police fired shots at the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect was taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Officers removed the suspect from the engulfed vehicle.

Officials say the suspect is expected to survive.
