Mishawaka EMT dies, five-month old child survives Miami County ambulance crash

A Mishawaka man is dead and a five-month old child is lucky to be alive after an ambulance crashed into a vehicle near the Grisson Air Force Base in Miami County.

It happened at about 3:45 a.m. Monday at U.S. 31 and S.R. 218 in Miami County.

Indiana State Police says the ambulance, being driven by a 26-year-old woman from Wyatt, fell asleep at the wheel and drove the ambulance into the driver’s side of a car at the intersection. The ambulance rolled over as a result and onto its passenger side.

A five-month old patient and the child’s mother were in the back of the ambulance, but weren’t hurt in the collision. 32-year-old EMT Mousa Chaban of Mishawaka was also in the back. He was partially ejected from the ambulance and died at the scene.

The people in the car were taken to a Peru hospital, each with collarbone and head injuries. The ambulance was taking the five-month old child to Indianapolis from South Bend.
