Native American Organizations Could Help With New Goshen Mascot Costs

Now that the Goshen school board has voted to retire the Redskins nickname, the district will move forward with choosing a new mascot – and it might not cost taxpayers a penny. Several Native American organizations have expressed interest in helping to foot the bill, or at least a big chunk of it, according to the Superintendent. The Elkhart Truth reports a final bill depends on a number of factors – like what will be chosen as the new mascot. If the school stays with a Native American reference, removing the racial slur but keeping the imagery, the cost will be closer to the $7,000 side of the range. But if an entirely new mascot and logo is chosen, as several Native American groups have requested, there are more signs that need to be removed and athletic apparel that needs to be replaced.
