A tight-knit farming community in northern Indiana is rallying around a farmer whose more than century-old milking barn was destroyed by a fire.
Thursday’s fire destroyed Jonathan Zimmerman’s bank barn in Goshen dating to the 1800s. The fire also killed six calves and damaged his milking equipment.
Zimmerman says he’s been overwhelmed by the outpouring of help from friends, relatives, neighbors and members of his church.
A neighbor offered up his empty dairy barn to shelter Zimmerman’s 93 milking cows that survived the blaze. Others sent heavy machinery, cattle trailers and other equipment to help move the cattle, clean up the ruined barn and help with rebuilding it.
Zimmerman tells The Elkhart Truth that without their help “I’d just be standing here by myself with nowhere to start.”
