WARSAW — Warsaw City Council on Monday night adopted the biggest changes in downtown parking in decades.
The new policy makes enforcement easier, discourages people from parking in the same spot in front of downtown stores all day long, and retains free parking for the first two hours.
The new approach attracted little public feedback or opposition. Council approved the plan unanimously.
The biggest change will involve new technology that will be used for enforcement, replacing pad and pen and chalk marks used to track how long vehicles remain parked outside of downtown businesses.
After the first two hours of free parking, motorists will be asked to use an app (more details later) to track how long a vehicle remains parked. The third hour will be $3, and every hour after that will be $1.
The fine for not starting a parking session after two hours will be a $25 fine.
The city plans to begin a probationary period this spring as motorists adjust to the new approach before it kicks in sometime this summer.
