New York Times editor becomes head of Notre Dame journalism program

The new director of Notre Dame‘s Gallivan Program is an associate editor at the New York Times.

Richard G. Jones has been selected to lead the school’s Journalism, Ethics, and Democracy fall program. He succeeds Notre Dame professor Robert Schmuhl, the long-time leader of the Gallivan Program who stepped down in 2016, and interim leader Jack Colwell, a Notre Dame journalism instructor and South Bend Tribune columnist.

Jones has plenty of experience in the classroom. He’s taught classes at New York University, University of Delaware, Rutgers University, American University, and the University of Maryland.

He currently leads the New York Times summer internship program and its Student Journalism Institute.
