Notre Dame Student Found Dead In Dorm Room

A 20-year-old Notre Dame student died Wednesday morning, Nov. 11, in his Siegfried Hall dorm room.

Jake Scanlan of North Potomac, Md., was found unresponsive in his bed by his roommate at about 7:30 a.m., according to university spokesman Paul Browne. Attempts by students and emergency responders to revive him weren’t successful.

“On behalf of the entire University, I extend my deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to Jake’s family and friends, and to his parents especially,” Rev. John Jenkins, president of Notre Dame, said in a statement. I pray that they may find some solace in God’s grace, and support through Jake’s extended Notre Dame family. We mourn with them on this tragic occasion.“

Scanlan was a mechanical engineering student.

No foul play is suspected. A St. Joseph County Coroner will determine Scanlan’s cause of death.

A memorial Mass for Scanlan is scheduled for 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Browne said. Jenkins will preside.

The University Counseling Center and Campus Ministry are also open to provide support and assistance to students.
