Purvi Patel Appeals Feticide Conviction

Purvi Patel, the Granger woman convicted of child neglect and feticide, has filed an appeal of her conviction. Patel was sentenced last month to 20 years in prison. According to prosecutors, Patel illegally took drugs to induce an abortion and failed to get medical help for the baby when he was born alive. Patel said during the trial that the infant was lifeless when it was born, and that she did try to revive it. She said she put the infant in a plastic bag because she didn’t know what else to do. Doctors testified that they estimated patel was about six months pregnant. A former friend of Patel testified that she was only two months pregnant. Patel could have been sentenced to up to 70 years in prison, according to Indiana sentencing guidelines.
