Rail installation in Kosciusko County to begin Sunday

Norfolk Southern is set to begin installing new rail in Kosciusko County starting Sunday.

It’s the second phase of their project after laying the rail next to existing tracks.

There could be multiple closures at a time this month as the rail equipment stretches over a mile of track.

Simultaneous closures could last for six or more hours. Motorists are strongly encouraged to plan extra travel time and use U.S. 30 to cross town.

Work will begin in Claypool and move north approximately one mile per day. It’s possible workers will reach County Road 550 S before the end of the day Sunday.

The City of Warsaw says the project could reach the area of Dogwood Drive, La Vista Drive, and Ranch Road by Tuesday or Wednesday. Neighborhood residents will be given 24-hour notice of those closures by hand-delivered flyers.  Next week’s work is expected to end just south of the Pope Street crossing in Warsaw.

The week of June 24th, work is expected to begin at Pope Street in Warsaw and move northward, ending near Levi Lee Road. At this time, Hickory Street will close for approximately two weeks to prepare for safety upgrades and reconstruction of the roadway. Either the Market or Center Street crossing is expected to reopen to cross traffic within two days. The other crossing, along with the Main Street crossing, will also be closed for a two-week period.

The week of July 1, crews are expected to work north from Levi Lee Road to the area of County Road 600 N, and the Leesburg side track will also be completed at this time. The remainder of the project from the Town of Leesburg northward will follow.

Local emergency services are planning accordingly for these closures.
