Search warrants executed at Whitley Co. doctor’s home and office

WHITLEY COUNTY —  A Whitley County family doctor cannot prescribe medicine after his office and house were closed and raided by the DEA.

Multiple agencies executed search warrants at the residence and medical office of Dr. James F. Hanus, a Whitley County doctor, according to the Whitley County Prosecutor’s Office.

Hanus has been in medicine since 1976 and practices at Dr. James Hanus Medical Clinic P.C. in South Whitley.

The search warrants followed a two-year investigation by federal and state law enforcement agencies. After the search, Hanus voluntarily surrendered his DEA registration to federal agents. He is now unable to prescribe or possess controlled substances.

The Indiana Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit is involved in the investigation. MFCU investigates violations of state health care law, including Medicaid provider fraud and misuse of Medicaid recipients’ fraud.

The United State Drug Enforcement Administration is also involved in the investigation. The DEA investigates controlled substances as they pertain to manufacture and distribution.

This is still an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to contact DEA-Merrillville at 219-644-3127 or the Whitley County Drug Task Force at 260-244-6410.
