September is National Voter Registration Month

If you want to vote in the general election in November, and you haven’t registered, the deadline is Oct. 9, said Indiana Sec. of State Connie Lawson, whose office is in charge of elections. September is National Voter Registration Month.

“Voting is a privilege. So, we want to make sure every Hoosier who is eligible to vote gets ready to vote. And, part of that getting ready to vote is registering,” said Lawson. “So we make it very simple and straight forward here in Indiana.”

Lawson said you can go to www.IndianaVoters.com or download the Indiana Voters app on your mobile device.

“They can verify that they’re registered to vote in the correct place and they can find out who’s on their ballot and where they need to go vote, as well,” said Lawson.

She said the state has taken steps to make sure your vote is secure.

“Indiana is unique in that we have what is called the Voting System Technical Oversight Program,” she said. The System, hosted by Ball State University, tests all of the election equipment used in Indiana for an added layer of safety and security.

Lawson said another fact about the Indiana election system makes it tough to hack.

“Our voting machines are not connected to the internet and neither are our tabulation machines. And, they’re not connected to one another.”

Lawson said Indiana uses intruder detection devices on the state-wide election system. Employees at the county level have a rigorous process to go through t get into their systems, so their user names and passwords aren’t hacked. She said the state is also protecting against voter fraud by requiring an ID to vote and the state has worked on purging voter rolls.

The deadline to register to vote in the November election is Oct. 9.
