WPD Press Release – Warsaw Police have one subject in custody after police responded to multiple residential alarms at a home near the campus of Kosciusko Community Hospital. At 10:46 p.m. Sunday night, February 19, 2017, Kosciusko Central Dispatch received a call of multiple alarms and a residential hold up alarm at 2204 Dubois Drive on the northeast side of Warsaw. Warsaw Police responded and found the front door glass broken. As officers checked the exterior of the residence, an officer observed a male subject inside through a window. The subject was a middle aged male and had no shirt and was yelling. The officer observed the subject walk to a barricaded area and turn around and make eye contact with the officer though the window. The subject then crouched down and fired a shot toward where the officer had been.
Officers at the residence attempted to get the subject to drop his weapons and come out but he refused and continued to state that he would shoot the police. Th e area was secured and the Warsaw Police Department Emergency Response Team arrived on scene. After negotiations failed, several gas canisters were fired into the residence by the ERT team. At 1:27 a.m., the subject walked out the front door and was taken into custody with no further incident. Taken into custody was 54 year old, Daniel S. Vanderpool, of 2204 Dubois Drive, Warsaw, the owner of the residence.
Police located no one else inside the residence, but found three (3) handguns and a shotgun that had been fired. The alarm panel was tore off the wall and another bullet hole was located inside the residence. The initial investigation found that Mr. Vanderpool was extremely intoxicated and on several medications. From his statements, it appears that he became upset when he could not turn off or silence his own alarm system.
Mr. Vanderpool is being held in the Kosciusko County Jail on initial charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
