CLAYPOOL – A barn was fully engulfed by fire Monday morning before the Sidney Fire Department was able to arrive on scene.

Sidney Fire Department Chief Kevin Wagner said within 45 seconds to 1 minute of the 911 call, smoke from the fire at 10266 S. Ind. 13, Claypool, could be seen in the sky 6 to 7 miles away.

“It was a standard old- school barn, so it was all wood. Wood siding,” he said. “It was going fast.”

Kosciusko County property records list the owners as Timothy A. and Emily J. Deneve.

Sidney received the report of the fire at 6:59 a.m. Monday and firefighters were on scene until about 9:30 a.m. Assisting were fire departments from South Whitley and Silver Lake. About 25 to 30 men were on scene.

Wagner said he didn’t know if the damage estimate was a “total loss” but the cause of fire was undetermined as of Monday afternoon. Farm equipment and hay were inside the barn. The fire remains under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
