South Bend couple says 6-year-old daughter was sexually abused on school bus while driver wasn’t paying attention

A South Bend couple says their young daughter was sexually abused by another student on a school bus in spring 2014 while the bus driver spent time reading a book or looking at his cell phone.

The couple filed a lawsuit last week against South Bend Community School Corporation and the bus driver, seeking financial compensation for the girl’s injuries, emotional distress, psychological trauma, future care costs and any court costs, the South Bend Tribune reported.

The girl was 6 when she told her parents about the abuse in March 2014, the Tribune reported. She said a boy close to her in age would assault and abuse her during the 15 minutes between when the bus arrived at school and when children were allowed to go inside the school. During that time, she said the school bus driver wasn’t paying attention.

A police investigation verified the victim’s statements.
