South Bend officer who lost gun on State Road 23 facing discipline

An officer with the South Bend Police Department who lost his gun on State Road 23 is being disciplined.

It was back in mid-September when the officer’s gun was found by a news reporter with WNDU-TV.

The gun ended up on the road after the officer failed to secure the weapon, which fell off in his car and landed in the roadway, according to a letter of disciplinary action.

The officer, who was not named in the letter, was written up for neglect of duty and violation of rules.

The officer has received a letter of reprimand and verbal counseling.
