State unemployment takes slight uptick in May

Indiana unemployment took a small tick up in May, but remains far improved since 2020.

The newest data released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development shows the state unemployment rate at four percent, up from 3.9 percent in April and much improved over last May when it was at 12 percent.

Private sector employment has increased by 234,800 over the year and decreased by 2,700 over the previous month. The biggest job losses were in the manufacturing sector, which was down 3,600 jobs, with the biggest gains in the leisure and hospitality sector, gaining 1,900 jobs.

Local numbers are expected to be released later today.
