Substance Abuse: Working to keep teens safe in your schools

Students in Kosciusko County will have the opportunity to listen to an award-winning documentary filmmaker about substance abuse.

Michael DeLeon, documentary filmmaker, motivational speaker, and founder of the highly acclaimed student assembly program, Steered Straight, Inc. will be bringing his message to over 4,000 students in four Kosciusko County High Schools on December 5th – 8th.

There will be a combined parent/community event held on Monday, December 5th  from 7:00-8:30pm at the Warsaw Performing Arts Center, where parents will learn about the latest drug trends, signs and symptoms to look out for and how to talk to your teens about drugs.

Students in the Wawasee, Tippecanoe Valley, Warsaw, and Whitko schools will hear a cautionary tale of life lessons from powerful speakers — some of whom are living examples of negative life choices —discussing the need for teens to “Stay in Your Lane” by steering away from drug use and its potentially deadly consequences.

The program stresses talking with parents/guardians/teachers, and ridding themselves of the idea that “It can’t happen to me.” In light of the increasing number of deaths in the country from drug overdose, it is a message that all students need to hear.
