Suspect Dies in FWPD Custody

Five Fort Wayne Police officers have been placed on administrative leave after a suspect died in custody Thursday morning.

At a press conference, Police Chief Garry Hamilton said it's believed the suspect, who was arrested as part of a drug arrest, ingested crack cocaine.

A woman who was part of the drug arrest is in critical condition at a hospital, after she too is believed to have ingested narcotics. Hamilton said the woman told investigators she was not feeling well and an ambulance was called to the scene of the arrest during a traffic stop Thursday.

The man refused treatment and appeared to be in distress after he was transported to the police department for an interview. He went into cardiac arrest before medics arrived and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a hospital.

Neither suspect has been identified. Hamilton says the ongoing investigation will be completely transparent and all of the facts will be reviewed.

Indiana State Police is also investigating and the Fort Wayne Police Department says they will fully cooperate.
