WARSAW — Other than doing some acrobatics on a trampoline as a kid, Ben Rice was never serious about dancing until given a chance to perform in Dancing with the Stars for Charity.

And he took full advantage of the opportunity.

With support from his partner, Hayley Horlick, two student choreographers, Lexi Reece and Kenna Miller as well as some sidework at home, Rice led their team, Totally Rad to victory Saturday night in front of nearly 900 people at the Warsaw High School Performing Arts Center as he and Horlick took the the top prize against seven other teams, scoring 59 of 60 points from judges in the fourth annual charity event.

Rice and Horlick, dressed in red workout attire, finished the show with an energized performance and finished it by throwing fake cash in the direction of three judges amid wild applause from the audience.

"It's been five months of really hard work that I wasn't expecting," Rice said. "But the choreographers took it very seriously, and they're so talented,"Rice said while standing with his wife and kids on stage afterward.

He gave plenty of credit to the choreographers.

"The program here at the school, I wasn't familiar with it, and now that I am, it's beyond belief the amount of work the girls put into it," he said.

Their first dance included a musical medley, and they finished with the song, "24K Magic."

"I don't know if it was the song or if it was just the energy," Rice said. "That's what we tried to bring the entire time was a bunch of energy."

Each team was working to benefit a charity, and Rice — a former "Big" with Big Brothers Big Sisters years ago — was happy to assist the BBBSS of Northeast Indiana.

Each charity shared in the night's receipts from ticket sales, and BBBS received an additional $500 thanks to a donation from H&R Block of Warsaw.

Rice called the opportunity to help BBBS a "full circle" moment.

In addition to critiques from three judges, performances were also calculated based on only votes from the audience as well as a secret judge, which was a new twist this year.

Totally Rad now qualifies to return next year in a contest pitting them against other previous champs of Dancing with the Stars for Charity.

Finishing second was Felonious Fosses (benefiting Bowling Against Bullying), which was led by Shaun Mudd and Kelly Bradley. Chorographers were Chloe Kim and Scarlett Walters.

Finishing third was Vintage Vibes, led by Glenn Hall and Courtney Walters and choreographer Dakota Gardner.

Also new this year was the ‘Above and Beyond Award’ to a student choreographer, in honor of Lee Anne Stewart, a longtime dance instructor who died earlier this year.

Laicey Snyder was this year’s recipient of the award.

Dancing with the Stars for Charity was sponsored by 107.3 WRSW, Willie 103.5, Warsaw Performing Arts Center.

News Release

WARSAW — The countdown is on.

Dancing with the Stars for Charity returns this Saturday, March 28 at 7 p.m., and organizers say this is the community’s final opportunity to secure tickets for one of the year’s most meaningful and entertaining events.

Ticket prices vary based on location in the theater, but start at just $10 for students. 100% of all ticket income goes directly to the eight charities represented by this year’s teams. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Warsaw PAC Box Office at (574) 371-5040 or by purchasing online at WarsawSchools.org/PAC.

Eight teams will take the stage after nearly 5 months of preparation, each representing a local charity and working to deliver unforgettable performances.

Producer and Host Kris Lake says the event represents the very best of the community.

“This night is about courage, compassion, and connection,” Lake said. “These dancers have committed themselves to something bigger than themselves. By attending, the audience becomes part of that story and helps make a real difference.”

The event has become a beloved tradition, drawing families, supporters, and community members together for a night of celebration and giving. Tickets to last year’s event nearly sold out.

“We started this event in 2018. It took a couple of years off and then returned two years ago. We are now in our 4th season, and we have raised nearly $75,000 for local organizations that serve Kosciusko County,” Lake said. “If we sell out this year, our community will help us cross the $100,000 threshold, and that would be absolutely amazing.”

This year’s cast features eight members from the community, including Glenn Hall, Kristi Jackson Hull, Nate Koehlinger, Bryan Kunz, Jason Miller, Shaun Mudd, Ben Rice, and Keith Sampson.

The cast also features eight staff members from Warsaw Community Schools, including Brenna Blazek, Kelly Bradley, Hayley Horlick, Macy Miller, Elliott Mozingo, Laysa Nocelotl, Leah Reinholt, and Courtney Walters.

Dance Instructor Bri Stewart says the emotional impact of the evening is undeniable.

“There’s nothing quite like this event,” Stewart said. “You see the nerves, the excitement, and ultimately the joy. It’s a reminder of what’s possible when people come together for a purpose.”

Most importantly, 100% of ticket proceeds will be split evenly among the participating charities.

“Every single seat helps change lives,” Lake added. “That’s what makes this event so extraordinary.”

Organizers encourage the public to purchase soon before the event sells out. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door, based on availability.

News Release

WARSAW — The music has started, the dance shoes are on, and rehearsals are officially underway for the fourth annual Dancing with the Stars for Charity, returning Saturday, March 28 at 7 p.m. at the Warsaw Performing Arts Center.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at WarsawSchools.org/PAC. Ticket prices vary, depending on seat selection. There are also 10 V.I.P. seats available for the first time. The seats are in a front row unobstructed area, and come with a signed production poster, meet-and-greet opportunities with the cast before the production, plus complimentary snacks and merchandise from the concession stand.

Over the next several weeks, eight local teams will dedicate countless hours to learning and perfecting their choreography, all in support of nonprofit organizations serving Kosciusko County. From vintage throwbacks to modern hits, this year’s show promises a dynamic journey through time as the production introduces a theme for the very first time. Centered around “Dancing Through the Decades,” each team has randomly selected a decade - from the 1960s to the present day - to inspire one of their two performances. In addition, every team will perform a second dance that is not limited to their assigned decade, allowing for even more creativity and variety on stage.

Producer and Host Kris Lake says the rehearsal period is where the heart of the event truly shines.

“This is when the magic begins,” said Lake. “These participants are stepping outside their comfort zones, learning something completely new, and doing it for causes that mean so much to them. Watching their confidence grow week by week is incredibly inspiring.”

Each team consists of a Warsaw Community Schools staff member paired with a community member, along with talented student choreographers helping bring their routines to life. These students are gaining real-world performance and leadership experience while contributing to a meaningful community event.

Bri Stewart, Dance Instructor at Warsaw Community High School, said the student involvement is a highlight of the production.

“Our students aren’t just learning choreography, they’re learning how to lead, collaborate, and inspire others,” Stewart said. “Seeing them teach adults, build relationships, and create something meaningful is incredibly rewarding.”

Best of all, 100% of ticket proceeds will be split evenly among eight participating charities, ensuring that every ticket sold directly supports organizations making a difference locally. Not-for-profit organizations selected for this year’s show include Heartline Pregnancy Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kosciusko County, Legacy of Blessings Adoption Foundation, Bowling Against Bullying, Lost Sparrows, Pavilion Help Center, Baker Youth Club, and Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

The production last year nearly sold out. Audiences are encouraged to secure their seats soon.

Centered around “Dancing Through the Decades,” each team has randomly selected a decade – from the 1960s to the present day – to inspire one of their two performances.

Tickets are available now at WarsawSchools.org/PAC.

WARSAW — Brute strength and impressive talent propelled Griffin Heckaman and Karris Nissley to victory Saturday night at the annual Dancing with the Stars for Charity in Warsaw.

It also helped that the dancers and two student choreographers — Malori McDaniels and Kayanna Sechrest — rehearsed 19 times in recent months — far more than the other nine competing teams.

[caption id="attachment_107562" align="alignright" width="350"] Griffin Heckaman lifts a smiling Karris Nissley during their second performance at the Dancing with the Stars for Charity on Saturday.
The annual event, hosted by Kensington Digital Media, attracted a sold-out crowd at Warsaw Performing Arts Center and generated $25,000 that will go to the top winners, Giving Basics, and nine other local charity groups in Kosciusko County.

The organization aims to connect Americans to people in difficult circumstances in other parts of the world, and provide clean water, food and educational resources.

The audience and four judges were left in awe of the winning dance couple's spins, flips, and lifts that were part of both of their performances.

Nissley immediately ran off the stage after the announcement to celebrate with friends in the audience before talking about her experience.

She said she had hesitations before committing to the contest.

“I’m not a dancer. Believe it or not, it took blood sweat and tears and five to six months of two days, sometimes three days a week, coming to practice,” Nissley said. “I ran in high school and college so that helped a little bit with my endurance but I would never expected to be given this opportunity or even win – this is just crazy – I’m so excited.”

[caption id="attachment_107566" align="alignright" width="500"] From left, the winning team includes dancer Karris Nissley, student choreographers Malori MchDaniels and Kayanna Secrest and dancer Griffin Heckaman.
Nissley is 21, recently graduated from Grace College and works in digital marketing for Silveus Insurance Group.

She said she thought all the teams were practicing as much as they did.

“It really paid off and honestly, it’s all due to the choreographers. They’re an amazing group of high school girls. They’re going to go far,” she said.

Heckaman said he was feeling blessed afterward.

“It was an incredible experience. I have loved all of it, even the challenges and it’s an incredible blessing to come and be able to represent an awesome charity and to help out the community,” Heckaman said.

Asked about his athleticism and strength that made some of the moves possible, Heckaman chuckled and said, “It’s all God-given gifts, so I’m just glad I could use it for something good.”

The 28-year-old is an Edgewood Middle School math teacher and part of the high school football coaching staff that competed in the state finals just a few weeks ago.

“It’s been an incredible year. It’s a blessing and memories that will last a lifetime,” he said.

Asked about his athleticism and strength that made some of the moves possible, Heckaman chuckled and said, “It’s all God-given gifts, so I’m just glad I could use it for something good.”

News Now Warsaw

WARSAW — Get ready for a dazzling night of dance, entertainment, and community support — the much-anticipated Dancing with the Stars for Charity night is returning to Warsaw and tickets are now available for purchase.

The event, set to take place on Saturday, March 29, at 7 p.m. at the Warsaw Performing Arts Center, promises to be a spectacular evening of glitz, glamour, and philanthropy.

Organized in collaboration with Kensington Digital Media, this one-night-only gala will feature an exciting mix of local celebrities and talented student choreographers, all coming together to support ten incredible local charities.

Tickets are available at www.warsawschools.org/pac, starting at just $15. With each ticket purchase, attendees will be supporting not only an evening of top-notch entertainment, but also local organizations that make a difference in the Kosciusko County community.

This year’s event will showcase an impressive lineup of 20 local celebrities from Kosciusko County, paired with student choreographers from the WCHS Dance Department. These dance teams will compete in high-energy performances, demonstrating impressive skills, stunning costumes, and a commitment to raising funds for their chosen charitable causes.

News Release

WARSAW — The Dancing with the Stars for Charity is returning to the Warsaw Performing Arts Center on March 29 at 7 p.m.

This evening of dance and philanthropy will bring together employees from Warsaw Community Schools (WCS) and local community members to perform in support of 10 charities.

The event, now in its third year, continues to be an example of community spirit, raising nearly $25,000 in the past two events combined. For 2025, organizers have set an ambitious goal, according to a provided news release.

“We want to raise $25,000 in one night,” said Kris Lake, producer and organizer of the event. “Our goal is to exceed $50,000 in total donations, and I truly believe we can achieve that this year!”

What makes Dancing with the Stars for Charity particularly special is the transformation that takes place as individuals — many with no prior dance experience — prepare for the big night, the release states. The event provides the community an opportunity to see participants grow and develop through rehearsals while supporting causes in the process.

“This event is not just about dancing; it’s about coming together to make a difference,” Lake said.

Tickets for the event are available now and range from $14 to $30, depending on seating preference. One hundred percent of the ticket sales will be divided evenly among the featured charities, with the winning team’s charity receiving a slightly larger share. Tickets can be purchased online at www.warsawschools.org/pac or by calling the WCHS Performing Arts Center Box Office at 574-371-5040 during school hours.

This year’s event will feature 10 teams, each consisting of a WCS staff member, a community participant and two students from the Warsaw Community High School Dance Department, who will serve as choreographers.

The teams will perform to raise awareness and funds for the following charities: Fellowship Missions, Food Bank of Northern Indiana, Project Ebeneezer, Kosciusko Senior Services, Fear is a Liar Ministries, Giving Basics, Boomerang Backpacks, Giant Paw Prints Rescue, My Team Triumph and Habitat for Humanity.

“We aim to feature a diverse range of local not-for-profit organizations each year,” explained Lake. “Our only criterion is that these organizations serve a need of some kind within Kosciusko County.”

This year’s teams include:

• WCS staff member Tim Devlin and community member Crystal Watters, dancing for Fellowship Missions, with choreography by Courtney Brower and Dakota Gardner.

• WCS staff member Lauren Sponseller and Scotty Rocker, supporting the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, choreographed by Ella Gonzalez and Amber Whitaker.

• WCS employee Kelly Bradley and business owner Nathan Underneath, dancing for Project Ebeneezer, with choreography by Victoria Peloza and Shannon Smith.

• Megan Davis and Scott Clay, supporting Kosciusko Senior Services, choreographed by Kaelyn Stoffel and Zariya Buchan.

• WCS employee Leo Patino and Courtney Brown, dancing for Fear is a Liar Ministries, with choreography by Chloe Kim and Scarlett Walters.

• WCS staff member Griffin Heckaman and Karris Sigler Nissley, dancing for Giving Basics, with choreography by Malori McDaniels and Kayanna Secrest.

• Joel Duran and April Slone, supporting Boomerang Backpacks, choreographed by Maddy Hart and Izzy Rozelle.

• WCS employee Erin Leinbach and Nash Christiansen, dancing for Giant Paw Prints Rescue, with choreography by Lily Kincaid and Kenzie Langhorn.

• WCS staffer Donna Moudy and Keaton Anderson, supporting My Team Triumph, choreographed by Lexi Reece and Bella Boley.

• Leo Jones and Quentin Slothour, dancing for Habitat for Humanity, with choreography by Jazmyn Taylor and Kaylee Baker.

“We’re incredibly blessed to have such an amazing cast this year,” Lake said. “This event wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and dedication of our dancers, choreographers, and volunteers. What you’ll see on stage will truly be a miracle in motion.”

WARSAW — "Dancing with the Stars for Charity" took place at the Warsaw Performing Arts Center in late March, marking a remarkable celebration of community spirit, dazzling dance performances, and philanthropy. The one-night-only extravaganza delivered an unforgettable evening of talent and generosity to a near sell-out crowd.

Nine teams, comprised of enthusiastic community members and dedicated staff from Warsaw Community Schools, graced the stage to support local charities. The event stood out not only for its star-studded lineup but also for the meaningful collaboration between community members and school staff.

The dance performances were nothing short of spectacular, thanks to the choreography expertise of students enrolled in the Warsaw Community High School Dance program. These talented students worked tirelessly to ensure each routine was a perfect blend of creativity and precision.

What made the event even more remarkable was that over $13,000 was raised, with 100% of all ticket proceeds donated to 11 local charities.

Among the beneficiaries, Joe’s Kids received a $1600 donation thanks in part to their designated team winning the coveted Mirror Ball trophy. Each of the other represented charities (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Cardinal Services, CASA of Kosciusko County, Combined Community Services, Kate’s Kart, Kosciusko Community Trap Neuter Return, Magical Meadows, and Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts) received a donation of $1300. Additionally. the WCHS dance department also received $1300 as a small token of appreciation to be used for future dance recitals.

Fans in attendance were treated to a diverse array of dance styles, from elegant ballroom to energetic hip-hop, all performed with passion and flair. Beyond the glitz and glamour, "Dancing with the Stars for Charity" embodied the true spirit of community collaboration, as members from different walks of life joined forces to support causes close to their hearts.

Organizers have already begun planning the event for the following year, with Saturday, March 29, 2025 announced as the next scheduled date.
