WARSAW — A new infusion of money from Lilly Endowment Inc. will allow for a much more proactive approach to protecting the health of area lakes by the Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams at Grace College.

Earlier this month, the Lakes and Streams organization announced it is a recipient of a $10 million grant from the endowment to help propel the Grace College organization's new Lake RX program.

Dr. Nate Bosch, who serves as the Creighton Brothers Endowed Director of the Center for Lakes and Streams, said money to support Lake Rx will help take their efforts to a new level.

Officials say $8 million will be set aside in an endowment for long-term use, and $2 million will be used to kickstart the effort.

New programs will be customized to address specific lakes with land-based proposals, such as wetlands management, while also addressing common problems such as E. coli and the growth of blue-green algae. More educational programs will also benefit from the new money.

“We are going to be putting those funds into visible maximum impact projects around some of our lakes here in Kosciusko County to build momentum for Lake RX increasingly over the next five years.

Bosch said collaboration with various groups will be a key component going forward.

He said they're already hearing from those representing lakes and wetlands groups, as well as farmers, contractors and government agencies wanting to get involved.

“We're getting a lot of good information from a lot of different organizations, and it's fun to see that, which is exactly what we hoped with this grant,” Bosch said.

“We're able to get more done together than we would be able to separately,” he said.

As the name suggests, Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams has had a long working relationship with Lilly Endowment, Inc., which is headquartered in Indianapolis.

That endowment is the largest private foundation in the United States, with assets reaching a record $100 billion.

The endowment provided a large gift to the Lakes and Streams nine years ago, which led to the organization being renamed.

The Grace College entity was established in 2007.

Bosch, who's overseen the Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams for nearly 18 years, realizes how unique that connection has been.

“They have invested a lot in the most important changes for the better in our state,” Bosch said.

“To have them backing this new project that we're working on is pretty exciting,” he said.

“At Grace College, we are unapologetic about our community involvement. When our community thrives, we all thrive. Collectively, these projects will address the health and wellness needs in the community while also contributing to the region's vibrancy.”

According to recent community surveys, 87.2% of residents do not believe there are enough recreational facilities, and 89.6% specifically indicate a need for additional indoor facilities. Currently, residents who participate in youth and adult sports leagues such as soccer, baseball, softball, cricket and flag football frequently travel outside the area for sporting events and practices.

The Community Fieldhouse addresses the shortage by providing year-round accessibility and comprehensive amenities. The project will include an indoor turf field capable of supporting U-12 soccer games with a divider curtain for younger age youth soccer. The space will also contain six total batting cages for baseball and softball, as well as a weight-training room and restrooms.

The fieldhouse will be located at the Miller Athletic Complex, and will be in a prime location for community access.

Eight new pickleball courts will be built adjacent to the fieldhouse and six existing tennis courts, providing sufficient space for community pickleball tournaments. The fieldhouse will also be connected to the Heritage Trail and the Winona Lake bike trails, just across from the Winona Lake Bike Park.

The second ribbon-cutting celebrates another step toward construction of KCV’s upcoming bike park, which will include a pump track, a kids bike playground, jump lines, a skill zone and more. The project transforms 15 acres into a space where riders of all ages and skill levels can ride, learn and grow. It builds on KCV’s 10+ miles of mountain bike trails and expands access to safe, structured riding experiences for the entire community.

“The addition of the Winona Lake Bike Park, in conjunction with the new fieldhouse, off-road trails and greenways, creates great, healthy opportunities for residents of Kosciusko County to enjoy outdoor activities,” said Mike Cusick, president of KCV Cycling. “This new recreation hub will also attract many visitors from outside our region, which will result in a significant positive economic impact for our community.”

The Times-Union reports Cusick said they’re estimating 1,100 truckloads of dirt will be moved from the fieldhouse to the park to create the base for the park, and that thanks to Grace College President Dr. Drew Flamm and others at Grace, much of the needed dirt will be moved from the Fieldhouse project.

The announcement comes at the conclusion of a national search that began last summer after the passing of former dean Dr. Jeff Fawcett. Pycraft is a Grace College alumnus who, after 14 years as a litigation lawyer, returned to his alma mater in 2023 to serve as an assistant professor of finance.

“Dr. Pycraft brings a deep love for the Lord and a long-standing commitment to Grace College's mission,” said Dr. Kevin Roberts, provost at Grace. “I am confident that his leadership will be a tremendous asset as we continue to grow the school and serve our business students.”

As a 2002 graduate of Grace, Pycraft has a 24-year history with the School of Business. He is confident the school is well-positioned to build upon its growing momentum. In the last fifteen years, the school’s enrollment has more than doubled; this spring, it launched its Gordon Center for Enterprise Development; and in the near future, the school will move into a new academic building, the Business Innovation Center.

“We have the potential to be a leader in Christian business education as we embrace the technological advances of our industry and prepare our students for success, all while remaining committed to our mission,” said Pycraft. “Looking forward, I want to focus on increasing our alumni engagement with our students and creating networks for collaboration and support that last beyond graduation.”

Pycraft graduated from Grace with his bachelor’s degree in accounting. He went on to attend law school at Cleveland State University and took the Bar exam in Florida. Pycraft lived in Florida for 14 years, working as a litigation attorney at a law firm covering civil law, real estate, financing sales and purchasing cases.

In 2021, he recognized his desire to teach and began pursuing a doctorate in business administration at Jacksonville University.

The first call Pycraft made was to his former accounting professor at Grace, Dr. Roger Stichter. Although no positions were open at the time, a few months later, the finance teaching position opened, and Pycraft knew he wanted to return to Grace. Little did he know that he would be assuming leadership of the school just a few years later.

“If I had to reduce what I love most about the School of Business to one word, it would be culture,” said Pycraft. “All of the faculty are wonderful to work with, and the students are amazing. Grace is an ideal place to work and build relationships that last, and I am fully aligned with the direction the college is headed.”

Dr. Drew Flamm, president of Grace College, agrees that there is alignment with Pycraft's new appointment.

“We are confident that Dr. Pycraft will continue to build on the strong biblical foundation that has been established for all of our business courses,” said Flamm. “He recognizes that faith integration is a cornerstone of Christian business education and seeks to advance the mission of Grace, sending out students who seek to know Christ and make Him known, wherever they end up.”

Dedicated to facilitating opportunities in entrepreneurship for Grace College students, faculty, employees, alumni and the local community, the center engages in student-run businesses, business coaching and evidence-based research to apply biblical principles to enterprise development.

“The student entrepreneurial showcase was a resounding success,” said Professor Glenn Grossman, director of the Gordon Center. “It was a true privilege to bring students, faculty, alumni, and local community leaders together for an evening of visioncasting. We’re just getting started, but there is much excitement surrounding what the Gordon Center for Enterprise Development could accomplish.”

The showcase kicked off with a School of Business faculty meet-and-greet, where alumni and community members learned about how they can partner with the school. Then, the formal presentation began, featuring a ceremonial launch of the Gordon Center and an introduction to its many programs. The event concluded with a preview of the student business ideas to be pitched at the 2026 Business Plan Competition (BPC). Attendees were invited to participate by voting on their favorites.

Programming at the center will focus on four core pillars: college community, education, local community and research. The first pillar, college community, offers student-led programs that give students from all majors opportunities to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and a “sandbox” to create new enterprises. These programs include the BPC, student-run businesses, and Lancer Labs, which connect students with real-world business problems.

Grace alumnus and founder of Language Matters, Lucas Fonseca, is currently using students to conduct research for his business through Lancer Labs.

"Working with Lancer Labs has been extremely beneficial,” said Fonseca. “As a business owner, I manage so many moving pieces, and naturally, there are opportunities I’m not able to devote my full attention and time to. Lancer Labs is an opportunity for businesses to engage with students dedicated to solving real business issues and to gain new perspectives from young people, enabling us to innovate and keep our offerings relevant to younger generations."

The second pillar, education, is primarily targeted at high school students. The Gordon Center will partner with local high school programs to offer educational events, such as a free enterprise leadership camp in the summer.

Third, the center will provide research-based education to the local community through seminars and services that help small businesses flourish and establish and grow new enterprises. The services will focus on providing guidance related to operational activities within finance, accounting, marketing and business plan development.

Finally, the center will conduct relevant research and share its findings through publication and training to be applied within entrepreneurial programs and course offerings.

“Our ultimate goal through the Gordon Center is to prepare future business leaders and innovators who create lasting value in whatever industry they find themselves in,” said Grossman. “We know this is only possible by partnering with the thriving enterprises and entrepreneurs right here in our local community. I am energized thinking about the possibilities that transpire as a result of these dynamic partnerships.”

The Gordon Center for Enterprise Development is one of four Centers of Excellence on Grace’s campus. Through these centers, students are mentored by expert faculty and staff as they conduct academic research and provide services to the broader community.

News Release

WINONA LAKE — Student entrepreneurs will take center stage on April 16 at the third annual Kosciusko Student Venture Challenge in Winona Lake.

The 2026 Student Showcase will be from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center at Grace College and is free to attend.

The event is hosted by the Kosciusko Student Venture Challenge Steering Committee in partnership with Believe in a Dream, Inc.

The Kosciusko Student Venture Challenge (KSVC) program now includes all local high schools, adding Triton Jr.-Sr. High School this year.

Partnering with KSVC has been a tremendous opportunity for Triton and its students, according to Joel Grindle, Triton Jr-Sr. High School Business Teacher.

“We have been able to connect our students with community members and entrepreneurs in order to help them build real-life businesses. It has been a tremendous experience for our students to learn and launch functional businesses in our community. KSVC has allowed our students to take their business Ideas and turn them into a reality," Grindle said.

The program, originally co-founded with regional entrepreneurship expert Steve Franks, has transitioned to local leadership.

Student programming is now facilitated by teacher-coaches Scott Greene of Warsaw and Aaron Engbrecht of Tippecanoe Valley, and they've been working with students from Lakeland Christian Academy, Tippecanoe Valley, Warsaw, Wawasee, Whitko and Triton high schools.

“Over the past several months, these students have shown an incredible level of dedication, creativity, and perseverance,” said Kosciusko County Coordinator and program co-founder Amy Roe.

“They’ve spent countless hours developing their ideas, learning the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, and working through the challenges that come with building a business concept from the ground up. We invite community members to come out, see what these students have accomplished, and show their support as the next generation of entrepreneurs take the stage,” Roe said.

The goal of the program is to grow and strengthen the local entrepreneurial ecosystem by introducing high school students to an entrepreneurial mindset and foundational business principles.

The program covers topics such as initial business idea development, elevator pitches, prototyping, marketing and lead generation, financial goals and more.

“From my perspective, KSVC creates a powerful bridge between the classroom and the real world. While I teach digital media, the Student Venture Bootcamps bring together students from across the school who have ideas they want to explore and develop. Programs like this help students realize they don’t have to wait until after graduation to start building something that matters,” said Warsaw teacher, coach and co-facilitator, Scott Greene.

Visitors are welcome to come and go throughout the evening on April 16.

The schedule of events includes:

5 p.m. — Enjoy appetizers on us while meeting new friends and learning more about the program.

5:15 pm. — 5:30 p.m. - Welcome, Amy A. Roe, Kosciusko Community Coordinator, and Scott Greene, Warsaw Teacher Coach and Co-Facilitator

KSVC has allowed our students to take their business Ideas and turn them into a reality,” Grindle said.

The program, originally co-founded with regional entrepreneurship expert Steve Franks, has transitioned to local leadership.

Student programming is now facilitated by teacher-coaches Scott Greene of Warsaw and Aaron Engbrecht of Tippecanoe Valley, and they’ve been working with students from Lakeland Christian Academy, Tippecanoe Valley, Warsaw, Wawasee, Whitko and Triton high schools.

5:15 pm. — 5:30 p.m. – Welcome, Amy A. Roe, Kosciusko Community Coordinator, and Scott Greene, Warsaw Teacher Coach and Co-Facilitator

5:30 p.m. — 7:30 p.m. – Visit student business booths “expo” style. Peruse the rows of student businesses. You may even find something you can’t live without!

News Now Warsaw

I want to spend some time in this space this week remembering someone whom I called ‘friend,’ and many of you did also.

Dr. John Davis passed away last week at the age of 89.

You can add his name to the list of people who lived a full life and whose legacy is spectacular.

Dr. Davis was a leader.

He was the President of Grace College and Seminary for seven years, was Executive Vice President for six years and worked for the seminary in the admissions department for four more years.

He led by teaching and preaching.

He pastored churches in South Whitley and Tampa and taught the Bible in 45 different countries in his lifetime.

He led by digging for truth and evidence.

He was involved in over a dozen archeological expeditions in Middle East countries like Israel and Jordan, and also here in the United States and Central America.

He is also well known for his work in translating manuscripts into what we call the New International Version of the Bible — one of the most widely used versions in the world. And he’s been a part of writing study editions of the New American Standard version and the New King James Version.

The man knew his Bible.

But the two things I would like to focus on more today are his work in radio and in this newspaper.

You may not know that Dr. Davis was big into hockey, and he worked as a color commentator for Fort Wayne Komet hockey for 10 years.

And you also may not know that he lent his sturdy voice to high school and college sports broadcasts during his younger life.

And the other thing I want to make sure we spend some time on is his column in the Times Union.

“The Outdoor Scene” was a fixture in this publication for 31 years.

He wrote each time with a combination of education and humor that lifelong journalists rarely master.

He wanted us to understand that it was fun outside, and he set out every week to prove it.

I find it quite ironic that his life ended so quietly, tucked away at Grace Village, praising his Lord for each day he had been given, considering how often and in how many ways he lived his life in front of us in all the capacities that he did.

My prayers go up for his lovely bride, Carolyn, and his family.

He was a wonderful man, and my heart is broken that I live in a world where Dr. John Davis is no longer present.

And yet, he is still here, and he will always be here with us in his own way.

I will never pick up my NIV Bible and not think of him.

I will never write another column and not think about him.

His influences are everywhere.

His voice is now silent, but the foundation of where that voice came from can never be drowned out.

Farewell, Dr. John Davis, and thank you…for everything.

Maybe, someday, you and I can share a fishing boat on a quiet lake with my dad and my son—bobbers drifting along in four different directions on a perfect day.

In the remaining space I have left …

Congratulations to the Whitko Lady Wildcats on their regional championship Saturday in the Tiger Den. I know Frankfort feels really far away on a map, and it is. But ask Warsaw fans about last year—that ride home after winning two semi-state games there and punching their ticket to the state championship game felt more like 20 minutes than 2 hours.

Winning makes a lot of things better.

That we haven’t heard a lot about the WNBA labor dispute is not a big surprise. The season starts in May, so there is no urgency on either side to even chat, let alone get serious.

Don’t expect to hear much of anything until mid-March.

March Madness is about a month away. Have you watched any college basketball this winter? There are a lot of good teams and several really good teams. But there isn’t one that you can say “that team is a lock for the Final Four” except for one: Michigan.

They are solid and consistent, and it feels like they have the pieces to win four tournament games.

Oh, and another irony: isn’t it interesting that the warmest week of our year so far is the week that Major League Spring Training begins in Florida and Arizona?

It won’t be long now!

News Now Warsaw

WINONA LAKE — Development of a bike park near the Grace College athletic fields by the Kosciusko Velo Cycling Club is picking up speed, and much of the construction could be underway this year.

Mike Cusick, president of the KVC, says they’ve already benefited greatly from two sources — Lilly Endowment and the Grace College Catalist Corridor program — and recently received more good news from the K21 Health Foundation.

KVC has already paid off the land purchase (phase 1) and has begun initial work on Phase 2, which includes key parts of the park.

The funding goal is $1.75 million, and Cusick said support through a matching grant from K21 Health Foundation would put the project in a strong position.

"So if we raise $375,000, they’ll match it and we will have that, in conjunction with the Catalyst Corridor, will give us the funds that we need to complete phase 2,” Cusick said in an interview with News Now Warsaw earlier this week for In The Know, the public affairs show you can hear on Kensington Digital Media radio stations.

Cusick and Rob Bishop, both of whom also happen to be on the Kosciusko County park and recreation board, talked about numerous bike-related issues.

The bike park, located along Pierceton Road, was proposed in 2023.

“It’s moving as fast as we hoped it could,” Cusick said. “It’s really going to come down to being able to complete as much of the park as we can.”

Once complete, the bike park will become a big part of the annual Fat & Skinny Bike Fest, and organizers are confident it will become a regional draw.

KVC celebrated the latest good news with a news release issued on Thursday.

"The Winona Lake Bike Park will be a great resource to promote healthy outdoor activities for residents in our community and region," said Rich Haddad, President & CEO, K21 Health Foundation, in the news release.

"We’re excited to support this phase of the bike park and look forward to seeing the whole community come together to make the Winona Lake Bike Park a reality,” Haddad said.

Phase 2 construction began in January with the clearing of brush and undergrowth in the future wooded trail sections. Site preparation will continue this spring for drainage, utilities, and adding and shaping dirt to change the elevation profile of the bike park.

Sections of the bike park will begin taking shape this summer, with expected completion of Phase 2 of the Winona Lake Bike Park in early 2027, pending the completion of this fundraising round.

"Once we've raised these funds, the Bike Park will open by early next year, and we can start fundraising for our final phase for a pump track and clubhouse facility."

The third phase will involve the construction of a Pump Track and Pavilion.

KCV Cycling is currently seeking donations, grants, and sponsorships for these fundraising phases. For more information about the Winona Lake Bike Park and donating, please visit kcvcycling.networkforgood.com or contact info@kcvcycling.org.

Other topics discussed on the radio show:

Plans for a bike trail from Winona Lake to Pierceton are progressing.

Officials want to see a bike lane be part of at least one underpass or overpass design if and when US 30 is reconstructed.

State and federal funding have essentially dried up, but Bishop said they can turn to other sources.

“The Winona Lake Bike Park will be a great resource to promote healthy outdoor activities for residents in our community and region,” said Rich Haddad, President & CEO, K21 Health Foundation, in the news release.

“We’re excited to support this phase of the bike park and look forward to seeing the whole community come together to make the Winona Lake Bike Park a reality,” Haddad said.

“Once we’ve raised these funds, the Bike Park will open by early next year, and we can start fundraising for our final phase for a pump track and clubhouse facility.”

The third phase will involve the construction of a Pump Track and Pavilion.

KCV Cycling is currently seeking donations, grants, and sponsorships for these fundraising phases.
The three-day conference costs $425 and offers six workshop tracks for attendees: poetry, fiction, nonfiction, writing for children, writing for young adults, and sonnet-writing.

“We’re excited to be back for a second year, building on the fantastic inaugural conference we had last July,” said Dr. John Poch. “We already have registered a good number of returning participants along with some new faces. Instead of four workshops, this year we will have six. We expect to be completely full again this year.”

“The Winona Christian Writers Conference aims to create a nurturing environment where writers can deepen their craft, develop their creative voices and engage with like-minded individuals,” said Dr. Lauren Rich, director of the English Program. “With its rich literary and Christian history and a picturesque location, Winona Lake offers an ideal setting for writers to reflect, learn, and grow.”
