WARSAW — Warsaw Parks officials are pledging to learn from problems that arose Wednesday during a slip-and-slide event held at Lucerne Park.

[caption id="attachment_96491" align="alignright" width="350"] Image taken from Warsaw Park's Facebook page posted on Wednesday.[/caption]

The city previously used the sledding hill at Kelly Park for slip and slide events but moved it this year to Lucerene due to a dredging project at Kelly Park.

Organizers realized their new location at Lucerne was not conducive to the slip-slide concept because the landing area was not as grassy as what they had at Kelly Park and that some of the kids got scrapped up a bit at the end of the slide.

After trying other locations, the event was canceled and park officials then posted an apology for the circumstances on its Facebook page.

The few comments reacting to the post seemed to be understanding.

Superintendent Larry Plummer was asked about the situation afterward and said some kids suffered scrapes as they slid off the tarp.

"We will learn from this and move forward from this event and provide the best programming possible," Plummer said. "I have the utmost confidence in our recreation department that they will continue to provide great programming like they have."

He said they hope to return the event to Kelly Park next year.

News Now Warsaw

WARSAW — The battle over the Kelly Park pickleball courts between one resident and the Warsaw Parks board continues to simmer months after the complaint first surfaced.

Judy Heiman, who lives near the pickleball courts, is now asking the city to limit the evening hours for pickleball at the courts.

Heiman has lobbied the parks department for months to take action to limit the repetitive noise created by the sport. The parks office has looked at numerous options, most of which would have been expensive, and then hired a consultant which suggested two barriers errected nearby could reduce the noise.

The barriers would reduce the noise from 56 decibels to 48 decibels, but would cost $10,000 to $15,000 and would not eliminate the noise.

Heiman was supportive of the idea, but questioned its effectiveness and then pointed to the idea of cutting back playing hours, an idea she said was instituted in one instance at a pickleball court in Florida.

She contends that noise from the courts makes it difficult to enjoy her three-seasons room and ourdoor gardening.

"And I can't use that room any more because it overlooks that park and that's all I can hear is that pounding of that ball because it's only 300 feet away," Heiman said. "I can't even sit out there with the windows closed. It comes right through the glass."

Board member Michelle Boxell said many folks who play pickleball work during the day.

Park board member Steve Haines didn't like the idea of curbing hours and said he doesn't think she’ll ever be satisfied.

"One thing that worries me is if we limit the hours, next month we'll have ten pickleball players here raising cain about having their hours shut off," Haines said.

"My opinion right now — we can not make you happy. We can put this up, you're not gonna be happy. If we change the hours, you're gonna want something else," Haines said. "I, for one, am not willing to change hours because that affects a lot of people."

The board chose not to take any action for now.

WARSAW — Pickleball is immensely popular with many popular, but one neighbor's concern about the repetitive sounds emanating from the courts at Kelly Park led to some investigation by park staff.

Parks Superintendent Larry Plummer reported Tuesday night that he and Maintenance Director Shaun Gardner looked at the decibel readings near the court.

The noise level close to the courts ranged from 60-65 decibels. The noise level close to the home of the woman who expressed concern was closer to the low 50s.

For comparative purposes, Plummer said a garbage truck passing by registered at about 70, Plummer said.

Neighbors who live close to courts said they had no problems with noise from the courts.

The city also looked at the potential at construction a to enclose around the courts, but that estimated appeared to be $2 million to $ 3million dollars

"I don't see where we're at a level that we need to get all excited and build a two or three million building," said Park Board President Steve Haines.

Board member Michelle Boxell said she thought it had more to do with the repetitive sound rather than the sound level.

Plummer said they do plan to add slats to two sides of the courts to help minimize sound travel for nearby homes.
