NORTHWEST INDIANA — A motorist who was targeted with gunfire while driving on I-80/90 ended up crashing into a truck.

The Lowell Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call from an individual reporting involvement in a crash on eastbound I‑80/94 near Calumet Avenue north of Munster.

The caller said they had been shot at multiple times while traveling in Illinois and that the gunfire continued as they crossed into Indiana. Preliminary investigation indicates that, while attempting to evade the suspects, the caller’s vehicle collided with the rear of a semi‑truck.

Detectives and crime scene investigators were dispatched. Due to the extensive crash scene investigation and evidence collection, several interstate lanes were closed for multiple hours.

Neither the shooting victim nor the truck driver sustained injuries from the gunfire or the collision.

This investigation remains ongoing.

SILVER LAKE — A South Whitley motorist died after colliding with another vehicle in southern Kosciusko County early Monday night.

Emergency workers responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of SR 13 and CR 1000S at about 5:55 p.m., according to a news release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office.

The collision involved a Buick LeSabre driven by Jason Jones and a Mitsubishi Outlander driven by Susan Lewis.

Preliminary investigation determined that Jones was eastbound on CR 1000S and failed to yield, striking the vehicle driven by Lewis who was southbound on SR 13.

Jones, 24, of South Whitley, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Kosciusko County Coroner, Tyler Huffer.

Lewis, 61, of North Manchester, was taken by ambulance to a Fort Wayne Hospital for complaints of pain to her lower body.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Pierceton
Police Department, Silver Lake Police Department, Sydney Fire Department,
Lutheran EMS, Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office, and Raven’s wrecker Service.
