NORTH WEBSTER — The National Weather Service has documented and recapped five tornadoes that tore through parts of northern Indiana Thursday night, including ones in Bristol, Wabash and Plymouth.

No deaths were reported, but the recap says three people sustained injuries.

All of the tornadoes were rated between EF0 and EF2.

Most of the damage occurred shortly after 10 p.m. and was part of a strong line of storms that passed through the northern part of the state.

Below is a recap of the fire tornadoes:

• An EF1 touched down in Wabash, with an estimated peak wind speed of 110 mph. Areas near Glendale Drive, McKibben Street, and Barkley Drive sustained some damage to homes, and a fifth-wheel camper was tipped over. Further to the northeast, near West Waterworks Road, an outbuilding was destroyed when a south-facing door appeared to have blown in, causing the walls to collapse. Two injuries were reported at the home. Nearby, a manufactured home was shifted several feet off its foundation.
• An EF2 tornado touched down in Bristol with an estimated wind speed of 115 mph. The tornado passed through open fields before reaching Hyde Park Drive and Stanford Drive, where additional trees were uprooted. A residential garage on Hyde Park Drive was destroyed, and one injury was reported.
• An EF1 touched down in Plymouth and had an estimated peak wind speed of 90 mph. It spun up south of 8A on King Road, damaging multiple trees and a barn.
• An EF1 tornado touched down near Adamsboro, which is east of Logansport in Cass County. It had an estimated peak wind of 90 mph. Drone footage provided by Cass County Emergency Management confirmed an EF1 tornado touched down across northeast Cass County. Damage included the destruction of a 40-foot pole barn on County Road 375N.
• In Balbec, east of Marion, an EF0 was documented with an estimated peak wind of  80 mph. A barn and house sustained damage.

The National Weather Service also confirmed an EF3 tornado in Kouts in Porter County and Wanatah in Porter County, but had not yet completed a preliminary investigation.

PLYMOUTH — One person died and three others were injured in a fiery collision on US 30 Thursday night in Marshall County.

The accident happened at about 9:36 p.m. on  US 30 and west US 31, and dispatch was told that one of the vehicles involved was engulfed in flames.

First responders arrived on scene at the crash on the westbound lanes of traffic. 

Based upon the initial investigation, the 2016 Freightliner tractor and trailer being driven by Abdussalam A. Noor was traveling westbound on US 30 and struck a Ford F250 that was sitting stationary on the shoulder of the roadway behind a white utility truck that was being towed by Bettcher's Towing. 

Thomas J. Diener was seated in the front driver's seat of the 2024 Ford F250 at the time of the collision. Due to the extreme force of the impact, Thomas was ejected from the pickup. 

First responders attempted to assist Thomas, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Two passengers in the F250 were injured. Those include Robbie D. Betts and Carter Haen, who were taken to Memorial Hospital.

Ryan W. Carnahan, the operator of the Bettcher's Towing wrecker, also sustained injuries and was transported to Memorial Hospital.

PLYMOUTH – A Bourbon woman is accused of drunk driving after being spotted traveling the wrong way on US 30 with a toddler in the vehicle.

The incident happened around 12:23 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers spotted Alysson ​Nicole Nutting, 28, driving the wrong way on the highway after 911 dispatchers were alerted to the situation.

Deputies were able to pull over the vehicle without incident.

Nutting's blood alcohol level was 0.20, more than twice the legal limit.

She's facing charges of neglect of a dependent, OWI with a passenger less than 18 years of age, and operating a motor vehicle with a BAC of .15% or greater

PLYMOUTH — Driving 110 mph on US 30 at 3 a.m. Monday led to the arrest of a Fort Wayne man who was driving a vehicle allegedly stolen from a dealership in the Warsaw area.

Damion L. Jeffrey, 19, of Fort Wayne, initially refused to immediately pull over once Marshall County deputies caught up to him.

He was headed west on 30 near 331, a few miles west near Pioneer Drive in Plymouth, when police took him into custody, but it was unclear how that unfolded.

The stolen vehicle was a black 2018 Jeep, but no other details were available about when the vehicle was taken.

Jeffrey was booked for resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, a Level 6 Felony.

Agencies involved in the incident included the Marshall County Sheriff's Office and the Bourbon and Plymouth police departments.

WARSAW — NIPSCO continues to work to restore power in several areas in Kosciusko County and across northern Indiana after Tuesday morning's storm.

In Kosciusko County, NIPSCO said North Webster has about 700 customers without power,  Warsaw has 272, Winona Lake has 46 and Plymouth has 50.

Overall, NIPSCO reports about 26,000 customers as of 5:30 a.m. were still without power across northern Indiana.

Some of the hardest-hit areas across northern Indiana include Lake County, Valparaiso, La Porte, Plymouth and Goshen.

The storm killed at least one person in Indiana. A 44-year-old woman died in Cedar Lake, southeast of Chicago, after a tree fell on her house, the Associated Press reported.

The exact cause of death was unknown.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service is looking into whether the storms spawned two tornadoes.

Surveyors from the National Weather Service are checking for tornado damage in La Porte and Elkhart Counties.

WARSAW — The Builders Association of North Central Indiana has announced plans for Home and Outdoor shows in Warsaw and Plymouth.

The three-day event begins March at the Warsaw Community High School's Tiger Recreation Activity Center. 

Organizers have lined up more than 80 exhibitors displaying innovative products and services for outdoor projects.

Admission is free and the show is open to the public. 

On March 22, the Home and Outdoor Show moves to Plymouth for three days at the Plymouth AutoPark Sports Complex.

PLYMOUTH — Following a drug raid in Marshall County, three individuals were apprehended and two children were hospitalized.

Authorities executed a search warrant at the Economy Inn in Plymouth around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.

During the investigation, law enforcement discovered a significant quantity of suspected meth, marijuana, and prescription drugs.

The Indiana Department of Child Services intervened to take custody of a 12-year-old and an 8-month-old. Both children were hospitalized after they tested positive for methamphetamine.

Those arrested were 39-year-old Gary Parks, 31-year-old Ashley Felix, and 59-year-old Albert Graham Sr. Each faces a series of drug-related charges.

The trio is currently held at the Marshall County Jail, with a $100,000 bond assigned to each of them.

PLYMOUTH —Every five years a Potawatomi Trail of Death Commemorative Caravan travels from Indiana to Kansas. This commemorates the forced removal of the Potawatomi, Chief Menominee’s band, from northern Indiana to Osawatomi, Kansas, which took place in the fall of 1838.

A huge statue of Chief Menominee is located on Peach Road south of Plymouth, about 15 miles north of Rochester.

When Indiana became a state in 1816, northern Indiana was still Potawatomi Territory. Indiana Governor David Wallace ordered the Hoosier Militia to round up all the Potawatomi within a radius of about 30 miles of Plymouth and march them to Western Territory, now named Kansas. This removal did not include the Miami, who were later removed in 1846. The Potawatomi were rounded up at Menominee’s village for three days and were marched down Rochester’s Main Street, on Sept. 5, 1838.

This Trail of Death festival was started in 1976 by the Fulton County Historical Society, Rochester, Indiana, president Shirley Willard, and a committee. The name was changed to Trail of Courage in 1977 at the suggestion of Indiana Gov. Otis Bowen, who was born in Fulton County. The name honors the courage of the Potawatomi on this 660-mile trek to Kansas on which 42 died.

The commemorative caravan re-enactment was started in 1988, the 100th anniversary of the 1838 removal, by Shirley Willard, then president of the FCHS, and George Godfrey, member of the Citizen Band Potawatomi, headquartered at Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Godfrey had ancestors on the Trail of Death. He was a professor at Haskell Indian Nations University and is now retired and living in Athens, Illinois. Godfrey is the emcee at the Indian dances at 1 p.m. both days at the Trail of Courage festival. Historic music and skits are produced in the arena at other times of the day.

Music and programs will be all day at the stage in the woods, named Chippeway Village stage. Chippeway was the name of the first white village in Fulton County. William Polke was the postmaster at Chippeway in 1832. Polke is considered the first white settler in Fulton County; settler meaning he bought land.

This year the Trail of Death Commemorative Caravan is being organized by Godfrey and Rich Meyers, Goshen, Indiana. Those going on the caravan will attend the Trail of Courage Living History Festival Sept. 16-17 at the Fulton County Historical Society, held at the museum four miles north of Rochester on U.S. 31. FCHS owns 35 acres a mile long beside the highway and Tippecanoe River. Those going on the caravan will meet at 7:30 p.m. Sunday night at the museum to sign up and discuss details.

Admission is charged at the Trail of Courage Living History Festival, which has two stages for period music and history stories and skits. The opening ceremony will be held at the stage in the woods with the raising of a period flag (27 stars) at 10 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Closing time is 4 p.m. Sunday.

Many re-enactors stay overnight around campfires. Over 100 camps, tents and teepees form a living history village during the festival.

Shirley is president emerita of Fulton County Historical Society. She was president for 30 years but retired in 2001. She has traveled the Trail of Death caravan every 5 years since 1988.
