COLUMBIA CITY — A recent Warsaw High School graduate who was part of the football team remains hospitalized after being shot Saturday night at a large party in South Whitley.

Jayden Habegger had been at a party in South Whitley that attracted about 100 people.

The shooting happened in the midst of a fight involving a dozen or so people.

Horacio Adrian Castro, 21, faces an attempted murder charge.

Witnesses shared a video with investigators that showed Habegger with his arms up, walking backwards and “appearing fearful and retreating” as a man and a juvenile approached him, according to a detective's report with the Whitley County Sheriff's Office.

The man, identified as Castro, allegedly fired the shot that hit Habegger.

Castro then left the party but was apprehended at a gas station a short time later.

Habegger remains hospitalized in Fort Wayne, and a GoFundMe page has pledges of nearly $9,000 that will be used to help offset medical expenses.

Habegger's mother wrote earlier this week on the GoFundMe page that a bullet had remained lodged in her son's hip.

On Wednesday, she wrote: "Just wanted to share an update, my son is out of surgery and currently stable. He’ll be in the ICU for the next two days so the medical team can keep a close eye on him."

ROCHESTER — A man was shot and killed by police on Saturday morning in Rochester after he allegedly pointed a gun at officers.

According to Indiana State Police, the Rochester Police Department and Fulton County Sheriff’s Office were called just after 10:45 a.m. to a home on Monroe Street on reports of a domestic disturbance involving a firearm.

When officers arrived, police say they found 37-year-old Steven Harding of Rochester inside the home pointing a gun in their direction.

An officer and a deputy reportedly fired their weapons at least once and struck Harding. He died from his injuries at the scene.

ISP is handling the investigation. The case will be reviewed by the Fulton County Prosecutor’s Office once it is complete.

The officer and deputy involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave until further notice.

WARSAW — The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting on the west side of Warsaw Thursday afternoon.

Dispatch received a report of a shooting at about 1 p.m. at 1904 Rosemont Avenue, which is near the Roundabout off Lake Street.

Police found a male with a single gunshot wound who was  flown by Lutheran Air to Fort Wayne for treatment of his injuries. His condition is unknown at this time, a news release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office said.

About 45 minutes later, a person of interest came to the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office to speak with investigators in regards to the shooting.

Police did not release names or any other details about the shooting other than to say the  investigation is continuing.

WARSAW — Two people have been arrested after allegedly exchanging gunfire in Warsaw Monday night.

Warsaw police responded to the incident shortly after 7 p.m. in the 400 block of West Porter Street. 

Police determined a confrontation had occurred between two parties and that Jose Avila, Jr. had discharged a firearm multiple times striking a vehicle. 

The driver of the vehicle, David Castillejo, Jr., initially fled before returning gunfire.

Both people were arrested and face charges o Criminal recklessness with a firearm. 

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call the Warsaw Police Department's Investigations Division at (574) 385-2210. 

Additional charges are being reviewed by the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office. 

This is an active and ongoing investigation, and no other information will be released at this time. The Warsaw Police Department was assisted by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, Winona Lake Police Department, and the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office.

WARSAW -- Two men have been arrested after a shooting at a residence on the south side of Warsaw early Saturday morning.

Police responded to a report of shots fired at 12:20 a.m. Saturday at 139 E. Baker St, according to a news release from Warsaw Police Department.

A 20-year-old man --  who police did not identify -- suffered a gunshot wound to the back, believed to have been fired at point-blank range.

Two men at the scene were arrested.

Michael Raul Ramirez, 18, faces preliminary charges of criminal recklessness with a weapon, pointing a firearm, and battery with a deadly weapon – all felonies.  

Alonso Miguel Contreras, 21, was also arrested on a felony charge of battery, causing moderate bodily injury. 

Police believe a fight broke out in the front yard of the residence and that a gun was discharged during the altercation.

The alleged shooter, Ramirez, suffered a head wound believed to have been caused by the use of brass knuckles, which police later found on the roof of the home.

The victim was initially driven to Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital to be stabilized before being flown to Lutheran in Fort Wayne. As of Saturday night, he was listed in critical but stable condition in the ICU.

GOSHEN — A Goshen man is in custody following a fatal shooting that took place in Elkhart early Saturday morning, and led to a police standoff in Goshen.

Ja Liahs Michael Curry, 23, was arrested and booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary suspicion of murder, according to an Elkhart Police Department news release.

"At approximately 5:16 a.m., dispatch received sounds of gunfire call from the 2300 block of West Lexington Avenue where North River Landing Apartments are located. Upon arrival, Elkhart Police officers found a man lying on the floor suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, according to the news release.

The victim, Thomas Ray Johnson, 37, Elkhart, was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators identified a potential suspect who allegedly traveled from the scene to an apartment in the 600 block of North Second Street in Goshen.

Officers with the Goshen Police Department arrived at this address, and later attempted to call the male suspect out of the apartment, the release said.

The suspect refused to exit and the Elkhart County SWAT Team responded to serve a judicially approved search warrant. The suspect exited the apartment and was taken into custody shortly before 12 p.m. without further incident.

Police Captain Kip Shuter tells News Now Warsaw the woman was shot in the arm after a drug deal went bad. Her and passengers in her vehicle attempted to purchase an ounce of marijuana in the Warsaw Wal*Mart parking lot when 25-year-old Edward Bishop approached with a handgun. The female victim pepper sprayed Bishop and began to leave when Bishop shot her, hitting her in the arm.

Minutes later, Warsaw Police were called to Lassus Handy Dandy on State Road 15 N where Bishop said he was robbed and pepper sprayed.

Warsaw Police obtained search warrants for the vehicles and cell phones for Bishop and the woman who was shot. Inside Bishop's vehicle, police located a 9mm handgun, designer drugs, marijuana, and a substantial amount of counterfeit money.

Edward Bishop was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on initial charges of attempted murder, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, counterfeiting, possession of narcotics with intent to deal, and possession of marijuana with intent to deal. He is being held with no bond on a prosecutorial hold.

The victim of the shooting was transported to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne with non-life threatening injuries to her arm. Warsaw Police wish to note that all parties involved are not from the Warsaw area. This investigation is ongoing and additional charges are expected.
